Global Diversity Foundation (GDF) and Moroccan Biodiversity and Livelihoods Association (MBLA) support High Atlas rural communities to maintain and restore their traditional practices while enhancing their livelihoods and sustainably managing their lands and resources in the context of rapid change. Our primary partners are the Amazigh communities we collaborate with in the High Atlas communes of Ait M’hamed, Imegdal, Oukaïmeden and Ourika. The High Atlas Mountains in Morocco boast a unique combination of physiographic and biological diversity which is paralleled by an incredible diversity of cultural practices and knowledge. These landscapes have been shaped by millennial relationships between humans and nature. Rural communities still maintain ancient practices, including seasonal transhumance, traditional irrigation systems and communal management of pastures and plants, which sustain the unique biodiversity of this extraordinary cultural landscape. Our participatory research and action approach is founded on the principles of free, prior and informed consent, community ownership and participatory decision-making. The following core strategies help us achieve our vision, including how to strengthen territorial governance by engaging communities and other key actors, as shown in the next figure:

Set of strategies followed by GDF-MBLA

GDF-MBLA’s work focuses on a central to eastern arc in the High Atlas that extends from the Al Haouz Province in the Marrakech-Safi Region to the adjacent Azilal Province in the Béni Mellal- Khénifra Region. This area includes four rural municipalities – Imegdal, Ourika and Oukaïmeden in Al Haouz Province and Ait M’hamed in Azilal Province – where we have conducted intensive field projects on plant conservation, cultural practices and livelihoods since 2013. We plan to extend our activities to additional rural municipalities, including Zaouiat Ahansal and Tighdouine.

How to use the database

The database presented herein comprises floristic, ethnobotanical and commercialization data collected by GDF-MBLA, in collaboration with the communes of Imegdal and Ait M’hamed since 2013, and Oukaïmeden since 2017.

HABD includes 26 distinct attributes (columns) and 1197 records (rows), totalling over 15000 data values. Each entry is ascribed to a plant species, genus, family, or higher taxonomic group. Certain subspecies and varieties have also been included.

The easiest way to use the database is by inserting the name of a genus or a species in the search box above. All represented botanical groups in the database can also be selected from the BROWSE page.

As previously mentioned, taxa may contain a series of records: Floristic data, ethnobotanical data and commercialization data, shown separately in the results section.

Floristic data includes: Taxonomic group; botanical family; genus; specific epithet; subsp./var.; vernacular names (Amazigh; Arabic; French; English); growth form; habitat; altitude (masl); climate; floristic divisions in Morocco; flowering time in Morocco; degree of endemism; Rarity; IUCN Global Conservation Assessment.

Ethnobotanical data includes: Taxonomic group; botanical family; genus; specific epithet; subsp./var.; used part; use; preparation; mode of application; use report range; degree of domestication.

Commercialization data includes: Taxonomic group; botanical family; genus; specific epithet; subsp./var.; by-products; sale price of final product in the High Atlas (MAD) (year 2019-2020); geographical origin of product in the High Atlas; national and international markets; other comments of the product.
